Le roi s'amuse for Clarinet Quartet
Written as incidental music to a play by Victor Hugo, this suite by Léo Delibes is described as “six airs of dance in the ancient style.” The action of the play takes place in the 1520s, thus the allusion to a Renaissance style of music. The piece is divided into 7 movements (beginning and ending with the same music):
Gaillarde
Pavane
Bouquet scene
Lesquercarde
Madrigal
Passepied
Final (Gaillarde reprise)
Suitable for high-school students and above, the piece can be played as a whole, but each movement also works well as a stand-alone piece.
Includes Score (42-pgs.) and 6 Parts: Clarinet in B-Flat 1, Clarinet in B-Flat 2, Clarinet in B-Flat 3 or Basset Horn, Bass Clarinet in B-Flat, opt. Tambourine
